The Great American Kestrel Nestbox Project

SIGN UP BELOW

Manassas Battlefield Park in Virginia is home to a unique network of over a dozen american kestrel and barn owl nest boxes, and S2S has helped support this work for years. Volunteers maintain and monitor the boxes year round, and they record data on breeding behavior and helping to band fledglings of both species to rebuild their habitats throughout Virginia.

Soldiers2Scientists has recently received the Hawkwatch Jerry Ligouri Scholarship to expand the American Kestrel Nest Box network at Manassas Battlefield Park and the Shenandoah Raptor Study Area in Virginia. Over the next few months, S2S will install 30-40 nest boxes at these two locations and work with Kestrel scientists and master banders to monitor this network throughout the Spring and Summer of 2025. S2S will also host a Kestrel Demonstration once the project is complete. Contact us today to get involved: Soldiers2Scientists@gmail.com.

As part of an S2S internship program, Alex Schwar has been working at Manassas Battlefield Park to monitor American kestrel and barn owl boxes. Alex was able to work with local experts to band kestrels and support the local population. He spoke about the experience saying, “Being able to work as a volunteer with Soldiers2Scientists has been an absolute joy and I would recommend anyone interested in conservation, ornithology, or just nature in general to volunteer with them or with any similar organizations.” S2S is grateful to Alex for his wonderful attitude and his willingness to learn more about our work.
