Hawkwatch Demonstration in Ely, Nevada

S2S had the pleasure of attending a Hawkwatch Demonstration at the White Pine County Library in Ely, Nevada. The bird handlers brought a Grey Morph Screech Owl and a Dark Morph Swainson’s Hawk and discussed the habitats and personalities of the birds. The Hawkwatch team explained their diets and their hunting abilities, and shared information regarding some of the injuries they had experienced and their rehabilitation process. The library staff and the expert handlers of Hawkwatch were tremendously gracious in their willingness to spend extra time with the S2S team after their formal presentation. S2S was very excited to meet the team as it has recently been awarded the Johnny Liguori Hawkwatch Scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of Hawkwatch and the Ligouri family, S2S will be assessing and constructing American Kestrel and Barn Owl Nestboxes in the Shenandoah Raptor Study Area and Manassas Battlefield Park in Virginia and installing around 40 new nestboxes to replace dilapidated or broken nestboxes in these habitats.
